A clarification about allergies.
As you say, it is not the gold that is the culprit, but the nickel with which it is alloyed - used because it is comparatively cheap. Nickel alloys also tend to break down, causing the ring to take on a yellowish tinge. Jewelers plate their rings with Rhodium to hide this, but that's expensive so the plating is very thin and needs re-doing every couple of years - at your expense. Wedding Ring Workshops (seven in the US) where you make each others rings with your own hands, overcome both problems by alloying their gold with Palladium instead of nickel. A member of the Platinum family, it is unneccesary to plate the 18K white gold rings when new - or ever afterwards. It is also non-allergenic.
My sister has the same problem with wearing jewelry, allergic or something. She only wears platinum as it is hypoallergenic. Last year I helped her boyfriend pick out a ring after a friend suggested EngagementGuide.com. There are tons of designers and store locators which made it easy. Also, this was a great tool for finding platinum jewelry outside of engagement rings... fyi.
